League of Legends Season One Championship Is More Than 200,000

The League of Legends season one championship is currently taking place at Dreamhack 2011. Yesterday was the initial round of the championship, with the final match taking place later today at 3PM PDT.

Yesterday's coverage by Riot Games -- who have the stream embedded in the PVP.net client -- saw around 200,000 concurrent viewers tune in to watch as eight of the top League of Legends teams from around the world battled it out in hopes of making it to the next round. The viewership numbers are incredibly impressive, leaving Riot wondering if this has set a new eSports record for concurrent viewers.

The stream also brought in more than 950,000 unique viewers over the duration of the first round.

To compare, the Royal Wedding at the end of April of this year topped 300,000 concurrent viewers on Livestream, which set a new record for the company. Akami reported that the Royal Wedding saw more than 1.6 million concurrent viewers in total.

If you're curious how the initial round of the League of Legends season one championship played out, you can head over for the Riot Games day one recap.
