The Yule Festival is now underway in Lord of the Rings Online, Turbine's free-to-play MMORPG based on the Lord of the Rings universe. This year's event includes a number of updates, with the promise of a more immersive experience that feels less like an event-in-a-box and more like something carrying a lasting impact on the world, based on your choices.
"The Yule Festival was an enormous undertaking this year. It has been controversial in its reception during testing as it takes the festivals in a new direction for LOTRO. This festival looks different, feels different, and is different," said Lauren Salk, designer working on the festival.
This year players will be able to partake in new quests by helping the residents of Winter-home to put the final touches on the celebration, participate in snowball fights in the snowball arena, catch the seasonal show at the local playhouse, gorge yourself on pies, eggs, mushrooms and more in the Winter-home eating contest, and visit the local vendors in festival square.
Salk, known as Budgeford to Lord of the Rings Online players, hopes that this will help to reinvigorate the holiday spirit in the game. Players can participate by logging in from now until January 11, 2011.
