Join the Elite in Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine

THQ and Relic Entertainment's Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine is in stores across the Imperial Forge World North America.

We've had a blast playing previous Warhammer 40,000 releases and particularly enjoyed the Space Marine demo on Xbox Live last month. One of our absolute favorite parts of Space Marine is actually the Space Marines themselves. Nothing is too much for a Space Marine. No battle is too difficult, no amount of enemies too many and no challenge too great for them to undertake.

Leading the Space Marines in the game is Captain Titus, the best of the best. But just what makes a Space Marine so fearless and practically indestructible? Space Marines are genetically engineered superhumans, literally created for battle and war. In Space Marine, the universe is constantly under attack and humanity fears for its life. As such, the people needed a breed of supersoldiers powerful and brave enough to defend them from all comers.

Enter the Space Marines and you, the player.

So, how does one join up with the Space Marines?

You don't.

Space Marines are the results of years and years of ruthless training and complec genetic transformations. Space Marines are recruited young, before they are too old and reject the 'gene-seed' that will turn them into a Space Marine. The gene-seed contains genetially tailored human organs that work together to convert a man into a Space Marine.

These organs work with the bodys natural human growth process to create new abilities or harness existing abilities. Some organs include the Larraman's Organ, which gives the body the ability to create a layer of scar tissue immediately upon being wounded, allowing the wound to heal; the Biscopea which produces muscle-building hormones, greatly increasing the Space Marines strength; an Oolitic Kidney which is able to process poisons and toxic gases that would normally kill them; a special multi-lung which allows the Marine to breathe underwater or inhale poisonous gas and even a secondary heart which serves to boost blood supply or maintain life functions in the event that the primary heart is destroyed.

All told, 19 new organs are implanted in a new recruit and this is just the beginning. Space Marines must go through years and years of exhaustive and grueling training, instilling the mental discipline and physical strength and stamina to hold their own in the ranks of their Brothers.

A Space Marine's body is probably more than enough to handle a swarm of bloodthirsty Orks, but just to be safe, the soldiers go to war with more than just muscles and might. A Space Marines standard armory consists of their Chainsword, an unforgiving Sword with Chainsaw Blade attached to it for melee needs and a handful of firearms. The Bolter is a full-auto standard-issue rifle that fires small 'bolts' that explode upon impact. Additionally, the Space Marines carry a Bolter Pistol which is typically used alongside the Chainsword and a long-range Stalker Pattern Bolter.

Space Marines are responsible for protecting the entire universe; hundreds of thousands of worlds are under their protection. Just to put things into perspective, in the game, players take control of Captain Titus. Titus' command consists of two Marines aside from himself. This is more than enough to handle the current threat of both Orks and Chaos Space Marines amounting to millions of enemies.

Three Space Marines. Millions of enemies. No problem.
