In an age of monetizing almost anything a player does in MMOs, Trion Worlds today went against the grain. The studio has announced that as of RIFT's next major update, players will be able to transfer their characters to select servers for free.
“MMOs are all about playing with your friends no matter which server they’re on, and that’s why we’re offering this as a free service to our subscribers,” said Scott Hartsman, Executive Producer. “RIFT is both a game and a service, and adding free server transfers is just one more way we can make this the best possible MMO experience available.”
When patch 1.3 hits this summer players will be able to transfer once a week to another server in their territory, taking all items, achievements and titles with them. Likewise, guild leaders will be able to move their guild's level and experience along with them.
The best part is, aside from the once-a-week limitation, there are no others involved in the transfer system. You can move your character and guild as many times as you'd like.
The character transfer service will remain free for the foreseeable future, said Trion in their press release. Subscribers will be able to go through the transfer process from within the game once patch 1.3 goes live.
