Star Wars Galaxies has been around for 8 years and there are probably more than a few players that cut their teeth on the MMO game scene with that as their first game. A few months ago, it was reported that SWG will be shutting down all servers on December 15th - reportedly so that it will not cause confusion with the new Star Wars game, SWTOR that's coming out soon.
What has not been so much reported, is that SWG is allowing the players to decide how the game ends on their servers. Starting in September, events will escalate the war between rebel and empire factions. These events will eventually culminate with a winning faction being declared when the servers are shut down.
If you've ever wanted a chance to win in an MMO game, this would be a good one. There is a bit of a catch though - you have to have purchased the game and be subscribed when September 15, 2011 rolls around in order to participate. After that point, no new subscriptions will be allowed and the game will be free to play until the end for those who are subscribed. For $20, it sounded like a pretty good deal - a chance to win in an MMO game and free play for a few months.
In case you need more information to be convinced, the sandbox style game features both space and ground play, housing, some very strange professions such as the entertainer, pet breeding, and even the ability to tell your own stories for your friends. It is NOT your average MMO style of game and so you have to be ready to learn and roll with the fact that it is a very old MMO game and contains some non-intuitive features and very out-dated graphics.
I know that for myself, the chance to experience the grand ending is well worth every Google search to figure out how something works. It's even better that I'll be playing with friends. We just need to figure out which side we're going to support...
