Starcraft II Delayed Until 2010

Based on recent financials posted by Activation for the first quarter it looks like the release date for Starcraft II and Singularity have been pushed back. CEO Bobby Kotick made the announcement that the games will not release until 2010. During the announcement had this say:

"As we prepare for next year, we have moved the expected release dates for two games, Activision Publishing's Singularity and Blizzard Entertainment's StarCraft II, into 2010," he said.

Activision netted $1.04 billion in revenues for its second fiscal quarter, edging just past its $1 billion estimate. 2010 is predicated to be another blockbuster year for Activision/Blizzard as Starcraft 2 has been predicted to sell as many as 4 million units in its opening quarter.

This confirms my fear that Diablo 3 won't come out till 4th quarter 2010.

I dont think money was any reason blizzard pushed the game back. In my opinion, Blizzard is THE most successful business in the industry with the 'best' games. Every game, except for 1 or 2 that blizzard has created has been a massive success. They have basically all the finances they need to push the game out when they want.

However i doubted now because most people dont want to spend money, especially on games. Even with christmas coming around, many people will be saving their money. This leads to the following: Blizzard postponing the game for more testing / polishing / more money, or releasing it relatively soon with less testing / less polishing / less money.

If you were the CEO of Blizzard, which of these would you do?

Oh and a blue post by Cydra "Today we announced that StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty will not be ready for release by the end of 2009. Over the past couple of weeks, it has become clear that it will take longer than expected to prepare the new Battle.net for the launch of the game. The upgraded Battle.net is an integral part of the StarCraft II experience and will be an essential part of all of our games moving forward. This extra development time will be critical to help us realize our vision for the service.

Our mission is to develop games that deliver an epic entertainment experience. As part of that commitment, we will always take as much time as needed to ensure that our games and services meet the expectations of our players and the standard for quality that we set for ourselves as developers. As we work to make Battle.net the premier online gaming destination, we’ll also continue to polish and refine StarCraft II, and we look forward to delivering a real-time strategy gaming experience worthy of the series’ legacy in the first half of 2010."

So ya, apparently activision is the entire reason they are delaying the game.

Yay triple post, but this for for Meatpieandwow.

"--The delay of Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty to 2010 doesn't affect the release schedule of any other Blizzard games, said Morhaime. He said once it launches, work will immediately begin on the second installment in the three-part game, Heart of the Swarm. "

I dont think D3 will be released in 2010, but this is not pushing D3 back. The developers that are working on SC2 are different from those working on D3. The only similarities would be environmental designers and character designers. (A few others, but nothing major.)
