On July 3rd, fiction becomes fact. Funcom's MMORPG: The Secret World - a dark modern day take on our world, with a dash of creatively altered history - lands on store shelves in just two days, and enters the realm of MMOs housing some very unique feaures.
Your first steps into The Secret World will be unfamiliar ones. Funcom has done away with the need to choose a class, and has even gone so far as to exclude a level system. Instead, the developers of this completely unique MMO would have you place your first foot in an shadowy, intricate world that is very much like our own. It won't take long, however, for players to realize that this place is also teeming with shades and secrets that set it apart from any place they might call familiar. Demons, undead, and mysterious factions are just some of the surprises that await when players decide to get a better look.
Here, every myth, fairy tale, and legend you were told in the warmth and comfort of your bed are far from fiction. Thanks to some creative alterations to our world's history, this story-driven experience pits players against the actualization of our world's proinent myths, legends, and consipiracies. Each mission goes beyond the typical grind of the genre and serves a seen purpose in piecing together a rich storyline, wrought from the mind of Ragnar Tørnquist, creator of the award winning The Longest Journey.
Of course one of the first things you'll notice as you gaze into The Secret World is the absence of a levelling system or class restriction. What this means is that each and every player is free to wield any of the thousands of weapons and abilities to whatever end they might see fit, and to dress the part to their own satisfaction. By slicing through demons or performing covert espionage missions, The Secret World will quickly help you to realize who your character is. Can't decide? Acquire specific skills that work well in concert with each other to fulfill a 'deck' - archetype class outlines that award chaievements and unique uniforms.
When The Secret World beckons, players will choose from one of three factions to call their own: the Templar, those who will do what they must even at the cost of lives and morality, to destroy all that is darkness and evil. The Illuminati, intellectual and manipulative, who crave power in a world that consumes those without. The Dragon, quiet and deceptive, those who plant seeds of corruption and chaos and wait patiently for the fruits of their labour to sprout. None will win prizes for protagonism, but there is little time for heroics when darkness invades.
When it comes time for confrontation between factions, players will fight for control of locations that, in our world, have passed into legend: El Dorado, Shambala, Stonehenge. In addition, players can freely enter persistent warzones, landscapes that can house hundreds of players simultaneously. All of this on a single unififed server, meaning that when a demon or enemy player makes itself known to you, friends are never inaccessible due to server boundaries. That's right, one unified server.
