The Secret World Drops Subscription-Based Model

Confirming our suspicions about the hints Funcom dropped in their last video about the end of the world, they have announced today that The Secret World has done away with its previously subscription-based model.

To play forever players need to just pay the original game price, much like the model Guild Wars 2 has adopted since its launch.

“With this recent change there is no reason not to join and take part in ‘The Secret World’,” says Game Director Joel Bylos. “Most players end up having a ton of fun once they delve into the myths and legends of ‘The Secret World’, and we believe the game has the potential to be even more successful without the subscription entry barrier. It is an ambitious and very exciting move for us!”

For those who haven't played, The Secret World blends elements of MMO gameplay with alternate reality gaming and social networking in an original setting with contemporary elements.

Imagine if every myth, conspiracy theory and urban legend was true. Imagine a world where you can become anything you want to be, without restrictions such as classes or levels. This is the premise for The Secret World, Funcom’s newest massively multiplayer online game set in the modern-day real world.
