More information about Wakfu's business model and advance subscription deals have been released today by Ankama. A 'freemium' model will be used, which combines free-to-play and subscription-based plans.
Full access to Incarnam and the Island of Astrub (Wakfu's starting zones) along with the opportunity to explore the rest of the world is included in the free version. Advance subscriptions can be purchased for Wakfu, in packages of of 3 months for $15, 6 months for $28, and 1 year for $52. Each of these three deals includes:
- A pet
- A Candy token (that temporarily boosts a characteristic)
- Several pieces of equipment selected at random from 5 elemental sets (Fire, Air, Earth, Water and Multi-elemental)
- Exclusive elements of the “WAKFU Pioneer” pack (title, set, flag, emote)
Wakfu, published by Square Enix and developed by Ankama, is a new MMORPG with tactical turn-based combat and dynamic environments which every player affects through their actions. There are multiple facets to the game, including very extensive crafting systems, powerful political mechanics, and tons of classes to choose from and customize.

While I understand why Ankama is putting a subscription plan in place, the differences between the pay-to-play and the free-to-play are too great in my opinion. The biggest difference is that free-to-play player will not be able to obtain (or use) money.
When compared to their previous game Dofus, it seems a drastic change in models. I think this might have something to do with the publisher (Square Enix). I know this has caused a lot outrage on their forums. I just hope this does not discourage a lot of people from playing.
