Warhammer Announces 10-Day Beta Trial of Mac Client!

Warhammer Online has announced they are giving players a 10-day Beta Trial of the new Mac version of Warhammer! The Mac version of WAR is scheduled for official release in the fall of 2009, when players on both platforms will be able to battle and quest together on the same servers.

Here's the official announcement from Warhammer about supporting Mac players:

FAIRFAX, Virginia – July 30, 2009 – Mythic Entertainment™, an Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ: ERTS) studio, today announced that the critically acclaimed MMORPG, Warhammer® Online: Age of Reckoning® (WAR), is being developed for the Mac® computer platform and is currently being offered in beta version. The Mac version of WAR is scheduled for official release in the fall of 2009, when players on both platforms will be able to battle and quest together on the same servers.

The beta of the Mac version of Warhammer Online will allow current players to download a client to their Mac computers and play with their live game accounts. Players who do not have an existing live account, but are interested in playing WAR on the Mac, will be able to participate in the beta version of WAR on Mac by downloading a 10-day beta trial account.  As part of the WAR Mac beta event, players who participate will receive an exclusive title and trophy reward for their characters within the game.

“The MMORPG audience continues to expand, and that means gamers eager to experience WAR aren’t all playing on a PC,” said Jeff Hickman, Executive Producer of Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning. “We want as many players as possible to experience the glory of Realm vs. Realm combat, and bringing WAR to the Mac makes this an exciting reality.”

WAR for the Mac is made possible using the CiderTM Portability Engine from TransGaming (TSX-V: TNG) that acts as a "wrapper" around the game software, enabling it to run seamlessly on Intel-based Macs.  TransGaming’s Cider technology allows Mythic Entertainment to rapidly enable and deploy WAR for the Mac, providing a new high quality gaming experience to the ever-growing Mac gaming community.

“The availability of WAR on Mac is an outstanding example of the caliber of games being deployed for the Mac gaming community,” commented Vikas Gupta, CEO & President of TransGaming. “Mythic Entertainment has created an incredible game and TransGaming is thrilled they have chosen our advanced Cider technology to launch WAR for the Mac.”

    oopomopoo,

It does not RUN on POWERPC Mac computer, but only intel Mac versions.

WHAT A BIG F___KING LET DOWN!!

  • #4
Grr, so you have a powerpc? XD

    Go get an intel! :D

(If for some reason you do decide, Newegg.com really ahs nice deals. At best buy they had a Geforce GTS 250 for 180 bucks. I got a bundle on Newegg with a Geforce GTS 250 and 4 gigs of ram for 130 bucks! Srsly, they sell a bunch of electronics. I basically bought a new computer for $350 that can play newer games on max settings. (Motherboard / processor / ram / power supply / graphics card. :D)

    - PS, i am not advertising, just saying... Newegg.com is awesome and cheap. PS, its all legal. :D

    oopomopoo,

Just cancelled my subscription and will play WoW from now, unless their support PowerPC in future. Not going to buy new PC or new Intel Mac just to play a game, ever if I like it.

After writing to WAR and getting a very fast response from CarrieG, I have decided to keep my WAR account. That was fastest response, I ever had and from Production Lead Special projects (web, Mac).

I will just have to carry my computer home or bootcamp (new hard disk, since 250Gb one at moment has little space)with windows,

Damn I hate you oopomopoo :D

    mwahahhhaha :D

and you are running out of room on a 250 gig hard drive? how? XD

(PS, im running on a 90 gig hard drive and i still find ways to make space. ;) )

    ps - Enjoy warhammer!

    Well,

My mac is used for my hobbies photography and filming. You can only bootcamp he hard drive which has OSX (if I wrong please correct me) and require at least 40Gb for windows, warhammer and any other game that may come along, maybe AoC..lol I run Final Cut Studio, adobe premium and plus usually, which all takes up spare.

I have second drive 250Gb, but thats full with photos and movies.

Trying to get this done asap, but in India, everyone takes their sweet time, I am not amused..:-)

For people using Power PC Mac's, it really is time to think about upgrading. Power PC software will be phased out sooner rather than later.

The War client for Mac is only a Cyder port of the PC version, it hasn't been rewritten at all, one of the many reasons why Apple decided to opt for Intel chips. Makes better business sense in the long term as the amount of software available will getter bigger.

The reason the War tam has been able to make a Mac client is because of Intel chips and Cyder. Many software companies are doing this, take Sims 3 for example, Pure port of the PC version and natively written for the Mac. That way they can focus on one platform and then convert with Cyder and release to the Mac community.

I am really excited about this Mac client, I bought War on release and never got around to doing a Boot Camp partition. Now I have a Windows 7 install via Boot Camp to try it out before the Mac client drops, I am enjoying it so far and will probably sign up once it goes live.

    Can't edit posts.

Meant to say that the Sims 3 was NOT natively written for the Mac.

btw one BIG mistake, you can now bootcamp PPC machine, which to be honest I should have know, since Bootcamp just partition the hard disk to allow windows to run on Intel chip.

Soooooo I am thinking of selling my G5 and buying a MacPro or iMac. Not sure yet, since if I buy the iMac it will be highest spec version see below:

    # 3.06GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    # 4GB 1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2x2GB
    # 1.0TB Serial ATA Drive
    # NVIDIA GeForce GT 130 512MB
    # Apple Mighty Mouse (probably use my bluetooth mouse)
    # Apple Keyboard (English) and User's Guide

    or

    Macpro

    # Two 2.66GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
    # 8GB (4x2GB)
    # None
    # 1TB 7200-rpm Serial ATA 3Gb/s
    # 1TB 7200-rpm Serial ATA 3Gb/s
    # None
    # None
    # ATI Radeon HD 4870 512MB
    # Two 18x SuperDrives
    # Apple LED Cinema Display (24" flat panel)
    # None
    # Apple Wireless Mighty Mouse
    # Apple Wireless Keyboard (English) and User's Guide

I may keep my G5 for my hobby and buy the iMac since I do not require latest and greatest aperture and Final Studo, since I am amateur at photography/film.

Anyway it is time to think about upgrading for me anyway.

oopomopoo (never buy a native wins PC)

Once you touch Mac, You never go back...:-)

    WolHook,

I agree, not editing your posts..sucks!!

I meant to say 'btw one BIG mistake, you can not bootcamp PPC machine'

    Another edit required!

It is Cider and not Cyder. Something wrong with me today. The War team actually state that they use this technology on their web page about the client. I have seen many games for Windows ported using this tech on P2P sites done by amateurs. I ran Grand Theft Auto San Andreas on my old iMac.

Souliisoul, I recently bought the top of the range iMac, cost me £1800 but was worth saving up for. I went for the ATI graphics as I had the money and thought "what the hell". Have an extra 24" monitor set-up at 1920x1200 resolution and it hasn't stalled on me once. Runs Windows 7 very well but that will be deleted once the Mac client is ready.

Power PC Mac's will be phased out rapidly, I can't see many developers maintaining two versions of their software that much longer when all new Macs have been built using Intel for the last two years or so.

    WolfHook,

Mayabe I will get you name right in this post :P

I agree I am thinking towards the iMac for $2,199 plus Tax (heehee, probably not pay tax). I will not get ATI, since standard you can also run 2 monitors.

With same cash, in not buying the MacPro, I could buy a Macbook Pro 15" and surpise my wife for Christmas with upgrade and get massive brownie points.

    MacPro or keeping wife happy..Hmmmm

    lol

P.S. I am not stupid, keep the wife happy :P

Jeez 2200? and i bought my computer that plays all newer games (crysis included) on max graphics for about 350. :p

Oh, and you may want to avoide Core Duo. From what i have read, its basically a partially better single core. Dual core is much better, as it is 2 processors. Duo Core is 1 processor that splits itself to do 2 things. (From what i have read.)

But seriously, go to Newegg.com. Im sure they sell macs and you would be suprised at how cheap the stuff is!
