Blizzard To Players: You're Not Quite As Exalted As Before

One of the changes in World of Warcraft patch 4.0.6 has quite a few players upset. Velistia discovered this firsthand: Blizzard has changed the requirements for unlocking "the Exalted," a title now awarded by 50 Exalted Reputations. They also retroactively removed the title from anyone who doesn't meet the new criteria.

For the better part of the morning, it was unclear if the title's removal from players who had already earned it was intended, but Bashiok just confirmed it. "We think 'the Exalted' is a really awesome title. With Cataclysm we added a bunch of new reps though, and we want the title to keep pace so that it's always representative of someone that's obtained a considerable number of exalted reputations throughout the life of the game, even as we add more," he wrote in a response on the forums.

So it looks like this title is going to be similar to "Gladiator" -- something awarded temporarily until new criteria must be met. It's no doubt going to cause a lot of ripples amongst the playerbase, as even though the new Cataclysm reputations will be plenty to reach the new achievement, it's still something being taken away from players who have rightfully earned it previously.

As Velistia points out, other similar titles were "grandfathered" to players who had already earned them prior to the release of Cataclysm. Even with dramatic changes to the 1-60 experience, Blizzard chose to keep the "Loremaster" title intact for those who completed it before the expansion. Likewise for "Explorer," even though a majority of Azeroth was "new" with Cataclysm.

This decision has been very unwelcome so far, so it will be interesting to see how Blizzard responds to player feedback on it.

    I believe this is for the best. Without this change, the title would become less and less special with each new rep added. I can, however, see why this will be hurtful to some people. The thing to realize about World of Warcraft is that change in inevitable. At least the people who already had it will have a big advantage over those who are just starting out.

    I think this change is good as well.

    Certain titles, such as this one, should have to be worked for over the life of the game, not just once, and that's it. This title has more prestige than the other ones.

    Example. Let's say you got "The Exalted" title. Then over the course of an expansion or two, that person doesn't even work the new reps up. That title would be funny to someone that ends up only having, say, 50% of the reps to exalted as a result of the number of reps increasing due to patches and expansions.

    Based on this theory, people who had Loremaster prior to The Shattering should have lost it, people that have raid mounts should lose them. Why? They add NEW raids, much like this "We've added a ton more reps in Cataclysm" as stated by Blizzard. 6 is not a ton. This is a very bad thing for Blizzard to do. They have never reneged achievements previously. Just shows how their customer service and caring about their customers is flying out the window at a rapid rate. Why grind to 50 to get a title they will just remove again in another expansion? They didn't remove it in Wrath stupid to remove it now. You say you agree with it and it;s for the best, what achievement will you be stripped from next?

    @Iceyshadows: I think like you.

    Some achievement should be dynamic over patch. It's the most logical thing.

    when zone changes, them, it's only logical to re-explore new one to regain the achievement.

    well... for me this retrospectively withdrawal of some titles is not so fair. Even in real life juctice say that if a title is gained after a law and that law is chainged, the title remain to the formal owner even if this don't deserve that title after the new law... so real justice don't act in retrospectively but only in respect of the citizans, so where are we?
