Legends - Part one: The Gathering - 60 Minute Machinima Feature

Nearly a month ago we stumbled upon a group of players who had been working on something amazing. Lucas and his team had been working on a premium Machinima WoW video for a few years, and were looking for someone to help get the word out and highlight the video series editorially. Curse eagerly accepted!

We posted the trailer for these new Machinima experience a few weeks ago, below:

A Quick Note From Lucas “Lima” Cedergren:

Most movies are made in Modelviewer. But this is recorded 90% in-game. We've had the help of some of the best voice actors in the machinima community, additional sound design by Glenn Xaydin Govan and special effects by Johan Vågstedt I think we have created something to be proud of. I very much hope that all of the viewers will enjoy it! This is the first part of three. We are currently writing the script for the second one and we are sure that it won’t take 4 years to complete it this time. This movie is more of a prologue for the upcoming 2 that will contain a lot more action and  delve deeper into the plot. Background

After centuries of conflict the world of Azeroth has found, at long last, sense of peace and well being.  New generations rise and new allegiances are forged in a brave and exciting new world with hope of an even brighter tomorrow - but in these times there are those who would seek to crush hope and extinguish the light. Minds dark and twisted, focused only on spreading the darkness that clings to their very being.  Unaware of this rising darkness Azeroth continues, in blissful ignorance, to enjoy new-found freedoms, unknowingly walking towards their demise. But there are remnants of wars past.  Heroes of old... Some would say... Legends.  Brave warriors who selflessly sacrificed themselves to protect their people.  But that was long ago, things have changed and the heroes of old have been scattered and forgotten, un-needed, until now.  Maybe if they could be found in time.. Maybe the course of this dark destruction could be averted.

All hope now rests on the shoulders of two young, fresh faced Warriors, as they rush to save Azeroth and reunite these heroes so that they can once more restore peace to the world.

As I mentioned in the YouTube comments, this movie is not properly anchored in the Warcraft lore. The opening of the Dark Portal for example happens merely 27 years before the War of the Frozen Wastes / Nexus War / Ulduar dicovery (i.e. 27 years before WoTLK), and probably 28-35 years before Cataclysm. All the conflicts since Warcraft 1 have happened in the last 27 years. There weren't "centuries of conflict" before the Dark Portal opened either on Azeroth, just a several major conflicts like the Sundering (10000 years before), the War of the Shifting Sands (1000 year before), war between trolls and High Elves etc. but there were centuries if not millenia of peace between such conflicts and most conflicts didn't involve all mortal races. This "sense of peace" shouldn't be anything new especially when it seems to be only a few years after Cataclysm (an assumption on my part). If it's any longer then Bolvar shouldn't be alive (ignoring the fact that he's the Lich King now anyway). If this happens centuries after WoW then I'm sorry but humans don't live that long either, even in Warcraft.

Speaking of Bolvar, he's not leading the Alliance since the start of WoTLK when Varian came back. He's also the new Lich King and his appearance is that of a burning zombie, not a living human. His presence in this movie makes no sense at all.

Nihilum has ABSOLUTELY nothing to do with the lore, enough said.

Bringing Gul'dan back to life? Err, don't you think there are enough stories of setbacks already in the Warcraft lore? In fact, I'm surprised he doesn't say "it was merely a setback!"

Next to that, the spelling, voice acting etc. could use some work.

This is my first EVER post on Curse, and I am doing it just to talk about this video.

This video recieved a lot of hype for nothing.

The voice acting and script are horrible. I will probably never be able to make a video like this but I know I could have made a better script and have better people do the voice acting. A night elf saying douche bag? It is just horrible.

The typos in the subtitles.... w t f????

    Really? REALLY?

The plot is a freaking joke. ZOMG GUYS IM BACK. MY DEATH WAS MERELY A SETBACK :O!. Zomg Gul'dan is back and we need our heroes!

None of the names even fit any of the characters in these videos. Their names remind me of Inuyasha.

The list goes on and on.

The only thing I liked about these videos are the fight scenes. Those are a bit cooler than what I thought I was going to see.

Oh and their tabards kept changing...

I applaud the attempt, but the movie (machinima) was so boring and cliche'd. If this is a first attempt at Machinima then it was very good. In time the artist will hopefully refine their craft and get some help making a more creative and interesting story.

Either way, who am I to tear down something someone created. It was nice, but personally I found it boring. Thats about it. I've seen machinima that looked worse, but were genuinely entertaining and/or creative.

This was kinda sad because of several reasons:
    It was rather boring
It had lots of typos in the subtitles
The slomos sucked because they looked as though their FPS were just really low and every gamer will hate those scenes
Some scenes were highly unrealistic. The two commanders can't take out 5 silly orcs which obviously had lousy gear, but one hunter can one shot them each? Similar the scene in the Undercity and the assassin. Also, after having finished their recruiting tour, the two commanders return to Stormwind. All of the heroes show up in Stormwind after them and all at the same time.

It's a nice effort, but there really is no need to hype this.

We are aware of the flaws of the movie, and we are working on improving the first version.
A lot of the movie was filmed a very long time ago (TBC times), so it might seem a bit amateurish.
But we've come a long way since then, the second movie will improve in sound quality, animation, voice acting, and writing. Basically everything.
But like we said, in about 3 weeks we will have a re-done downloadable version on Warcraftmovies and Curse with better subs, some scenes fixed, some better voices, the Nihilum part will be swapped out, and so on and so forth.

And about Tales of the Past 3, we are not trying to be "like" ToTP, nor are we trying to compete with it. Legends was in the planning stages before ToTP3 came out, and we had already started working on it (slowly) by then.
We all loved Tales of the Past, and we are definitely not trying to copy it in any way shape or form, and I highly doubt that our first movie will even dent the awesomeness of ToTP3. But we still have two more movies coming, and they will be severely improved, as we have much more experience and knowledge at this point. Look forwards to it, because these movies will be Legendary! (See what I did there?)
