Turning up the heat on GRDN and his iAddOns

Greetings, folks!

Some of you may know me from my time around the forums on Curse, IRC, or from my work with the Norganna’s AddOns crew.  In the following series, we invite some of our AddOn Author friends to bring their AddOns and tell us a bit about them and themselves – beckoning them into the fire, if you will.  =)

This time around, we bring GRDN into the fire, along with his iFriends, iGuildiMoney, and iWait AddOns.

These four AddOns do require an LDB, LibDataBroker, display AddOn, such as StatBlockCore, Chocolate Bar, or one of the other fine examples in the Curse Data Broker AddOn subsection.

GRDN, also known as twenty-five year old Tobi to his family and friends, was born and raised in Germany and lives in Frankfurt, ‘Banker City’.  He works as a businessperson, by day, doing fun things such as accounting, hiring and firing, et cetera.

Tobi began working with AddOns in about 2005, when he would enhance existing work for personal use and for use by his wife and family.  How did he start out, you ask?  Well, a combination of resources was the key.  He found  Wowpedia, with its great API sections, to be very helpful, along with the Curse forums, a bunch of other fansites, and last, but not least, looking into other AddOns to check how other authors did specific things.  Like many other great AddOn authors, he has decided to take the plunge and share his work with the greater WoW Community here on Curse.

Although not a Lua expert, Tobi has a wide range of talents, such as C++, Perl, PHP, Java, and Javascript.  As you can easily tell from his current offerings, his goal is to write AddOns that are ready to go upon download and do not require extensive configuration before use.

Thus far, Tobi has focused primarily upon LDB AddOns, and says “I really love LDB AddOns”, but he also notes that there are some other projects that he would like to realize that move beyond LDB’s scope.  Let us hope that he is able to keep up with his lightweight, simple design; definitely looking forward to what he has in store for us, next!

Okay, so on to the AddOn fun...

iFriends is straightforward, and shows an LDB button, including X/Y text, that shows how many folks are online at the given time.  Upon mouse-over, it show a list of all of your friends playing any RealID game, so you can see who is playing World of Warcraft, StarCraft, and Warcraft.
What is displayed, along with order and sizing is also configurable via the Blizzard AddOn options menu.

iGuild shows you only those folks who are playing World of Warcraft, and are in your guild.  Again, the LDB button is followed by a quick X/Y display, which then expands when you hover over it with your mouse.  The expanded, configurable view shows a number of nice-to-know pieces of information, such as level, name, the zone in which the character is located, their guild rank, and any notes.

Both iFriends and iGuild share the same sort of simple options frame:

As shown, above, you can choose what to display and that item’s alignment when it is displayed.

iMoney is simple, it shows money on hand in GSC format.  Upon mouse-over, it displays money gained in the given day in green/red at the top of the frame.

iWait is a Looking for Dungeon/Raid/BattleGround tool.

The normal ‘button’ is shown at the top, with LFD, along with which positions are currently filled.  As shown, only one Damage Dealer is queued, shown in green.  The T, H, and other two D slots are red, indicating they have yet to be filled.

Upon mouse-over, the pop-up shows a condensed view of the traditional LFD/R frame.  You can also right-click to exit a queue.

That is all for this week, WoW folks.  Look for more in the upcoming weeks from established and up-and-coming Authors and their AddOns here at Curse!
