WildStar Addon Spotlight: TapThat

WildStar Addon Spotlight

Welcome to our weekly WildStar Addon Spotlight! This week we've got the spotlight on TapThat, an addon created by legowxelab2z8 that automates those pesky mini-games when all you want is to pick up an item or finish a quest!

TapThat might be a bit of a controversial addon if it wasn't for Carbine insisting that it's perfectly fine to use. If you haven't heard of TapThat, you might have heard of similar addons that automate what Carbine calls Client Side Interactions (CSIs). CSIs are those mini-games you have to complete after you interact with an item in the world. Most of the time you can just pick stuff up by hitting 'F' or right clicking it in the world, but sometimes theres a Simon-like game that comes up or you have to rapidly press 'F' to fill up a gauge to finish the CSI.

There are four CSIs in the game, Rapid Tapping is when you rapidly press 'F' as described before, Press and Hold is pretty self explanitory, Metronome is the game where you have to press 'F' when the little orb moves over the target, and finally Memory is the Simon-like game you've probably done a hundred times by now. TapThat simply automates these so you never have worry about messing one up. Others use it because the Rapid Tapping is too hard or painful for them but they can do the others just fine.

But thanks to Carbines liberal policy regarding what addons are allowed, (their stance is if it can be done through the API it's allowed, period) there really isn't a reason not to automate one/two/all if they really annoy you. Whatever your reasons, TapThat is a valuable time saving and quality of life addon, but beware, Carbine could drop this support in their API at any given patch if they feel like it. I don't necessarily think that will happen because they would have done it by now, I would only assume.

  • Install using the free Curse Client, which you can download here, or follow the manual instructions below:
    1. Download the Addon from here.
    2. Locate your Addons folder. (C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\NCSOFT\WildStar\Addons)
    3. Place the TapThat folder found in the .zip file into your Addons folder.

Final Words

Is using TapThat cheating? In my personal opinion, I don't think so, because Carbine could patch it out at any time but they choose not to. Does it enable a smoother, quicker leveling experience? It sure does. Does it stop you from throwing your mouse because you failed a Simon game like five times in a row and can't take it because the exile prison guards keep respawning and you have to take them out before you can give it a sixth try? Yes, yes it does.

Without this addon, I would have long stopped playing Wildstar. Thankfully, I discovered it very early after changing character to what would be my main.

You have no idea how insanely annoying and even physically painful these "CSI" mini-games are while leveling up. They are also everywhere in the leveling experience.

At endgame, thankfully, they are almost non-existent.
